The Melloncollies Say Goodbye Cruel World

The Melloncollies are anything but Melancholy! This band of New Yorkers are in fact quite a chipper bunch and their album, Goodbye Cruel World is just about the most life affirming thing you're likely to hear. Playing the ironic card for maximum exposure the band paints a strange picture that can't be judged by it's name or cover. That's a good thing as it makes for quite a surprise upon listening'; it's the sort of thing that might just put a smile on your face.

Sounding like an American Elvis Costello, The Melloncollies are a full on power pop band who value melodies and huge memorable choruses over anything else. This band structures every song around some sort of vocal or instrumental lure that captures your ears, takes them hostage and holds them for ransom. It works because you want to pay to that ransom and hear every song on Goodbye Cruel World. This is a fantastically enthusiastic pop album brimming with jumpy guitars and harmonies that sound like an electrified barbershop quartet.

Goodbye Cruel World never fails to elevate each of the songs on a wave of power chords and simple but effective tricks that will leave you speechless. The Melloncollies even succeed when they slow things down and attempt to churn out a ballad. It's all about wooing you and they do such a good job that it's just about pointless not to like these guys. From the mind-numbing repetition of, "You You Yeah Yeah," to the Soul Asylum-like (if they were good) power punch of "Misery," Goodbye Cruel World never ceases to impress.

Filled with crunchy, tasty pop that's as good as the best hamburger you've ever had, Goodbye Cruel World gets better with each bite. It's a record that's easy to latch on to, and isn't overly complicated and as a result, it hits a pop bullseye. Elvis Costello would be proud.
