Darren Keen Makes A Slumberparty Record

"My name is Darren and I made Slumberparty Recordin my bedroom all by myself. I’m terrible at the drums so I used a $5 toy keyboard rhythm section. This was really fun to make, and I hope you enjoy listening to it. You’ll never get to heaven if you’re scared of getting high." That in four sentences is all you need to know about Darren Keen from the man himself.

Now his album Slumberparty Recordis exactly as he said, a bedroom lo-fi symphony to life. Sounding rough around the edges but still charming this is a record that sounds like the Moldy Peaches if they actually knew how to play their instruments in a furry fight with the Flaming Lips. Slumberparty Record is not a singer songwriter record, but a full on one man band effort. At times the record sounds as if it were recorded at an electric organ store using nothing but the demo mode and at others it sounds like he's in his room just banging on everything.

Darren has cut to the core of what makes a song great and then cloned it thirteen times to create a record whose lack of budget and production never gets in the way. Slumberparty Recordis a good record simply because Darren knows how to write a song that tugs at your heart while pleasing your ears and even making you laugh along the way.

From the samba demo mode of "Rainbow," to the noisy shambolic pop of "Make A Watch," Darren Keen has made an innovative record by simply using everything at his disposal. The result is a record that's amiable and relatable no matter how quirky he gets. Darren Keen is a true talent that's able to make more with less and create something brilliant with next to nothing. Slumberparty Recordis proof of this and proves that sometimes the best things come in underproduced packages.
