Rose Melberg's Homemade Ship
Rose Melberg is officially the most adorable artist on the entire K records roster, if not all of twee pop. I've wanted to give her a hug since the first time I heard a Softies record back in the 90's and while I've never been able to do that, she's been kind enough to give me (ok...us) an armload of intimately emotional music that's tender and fragile. Her latest album, Homemade Ship is no different and as always, it's really quite good.
With nary a beat around Rose soothes the savage beast with here lilting vocals. She's truly magical and whether it's with a band or just her and her guitar she finds a way to your heart. Homemade Ship is a record that just wants to be loved and with as warm and as simple of songs it's not hard to do. While I do wish this was more like The Softies, I can't complain because I've always been a fan of just how fragile and cuddly Rose's voice is.
Filled with heartache, sorrow and contentment, Homemade Ship is a record designed for the cold months of winter. It's sparseness is almost like a reflection of the season and while there might not be much there, there's always the hope for something to grow out of nothing. This is a touching record and Rose's voice has never been sweeter or better. Homemade Shipis yet another charming and graceful record in the illustrious career of one of the loveliest singers in all of twee-dom.
