West Coast Junk Culture

Recording artist and sampledelic master extraordinaire, Deepak Mantena has unleashed his new project under the moniker of Junk Culture. Entitled, West Coast, Junk Culture samples just about everything under the sun and runs it through a hand held recorder. This process gives his sound that hack and slash lo-fi grittiness that makes it sound pre-pro tooled in all the best ways. Deepak is living proof of Junk Culture and its something he embraces every day.

Hacked, diced, sliced, chopped and re-worked the nine songs on West Coast are the sound of a 1,000 broken cd's players working backwards with an 8 track recorder hooked up to them. Off speed, off tempo but with hooks, West Coast is a chaotic frenzy of bits of tape sent through the ringer. It's good stuff when it actually slows down long enough for a song to develop; see, "That's Not Me," for a perfect example of just how Junk Culture creates a twisted hook with ease. West Coastis fascinating stuff and while it might not be loaded with singles, the EP has enough of a frenetic pace to it that you'll need a notebook to keep track of. More fun than a sugar high, Junk Culture is a self fulfilling prophecy whose name tells the tale of what West Coast is all about.
